i have been on bhw from quiteeee long and i dont recall ever posting a negative review about anyone
but this experience i just cannot hold myself back.. such a shit it is.!

So this week i shifted to hostwinds after seeing good posts about them! but i assure you .. those posts probably are all fake and bought up promotion.. i have never seen this Stupid resolutions from any provider in any field ever!
    so this is what happned
i bought their dedicated server.. with extra ram and raid 1 ssd and 1gbps port
and ddos protection and wind shield server protection and windspeed optimisation
and everything best that i thought they could offer
    for a simple woocommerce website!
well i wanted best quality and response time

so today my site recieved a very small ddos attack.. the ddos attack did not took my site down but hostwinds system null routed my site ip and took the site down for whole 24 hours!

so i got a ticket that said
    "
    Code:
Your server's IP indicated in the ticket subject has been nullrouted.

A null route (blackhole route) is a network route (routing table entry) that goes nowhere. Matching packets are dropped (ignored) rather than forwarded, acting as a kind of very limited firewall. The act of using null routes is often called blackhole filtering. In short, your IP will be inaccessible.

This was due to a large DDoS attack that your IP has received, it is Hostwinds policy to nullroute IPs that receive attacks of 1Gbps or larger.

Per our policy, your IP will be nullrouted for a period of 24 hours, to ensure that any attacks have ceased.

However, Hostwinds is proud to offer DDoS protection at this time, this protection would ensure that your IP is not affected nor nullrouted when receiving DDOS attacks of any size. We mitigate attacks on a daily basis for our clients, sometimes exceeding 200+Gbps. We have the infrastructure in place to protect you and your client's as well.

Hostwinds DDoS Protection is a monthly recurring cost, of $25 per month."

now keep in mind that i already have ddos protection!
and ddos wasnt that big even to take down the server!
so i replied them and its been hour or so and still no resolution
i tried to msg them so many times that guys i already have that ddos protection so atleast reverse this null routing that my site would start working...
    but no!
they kept on saying we are checking into!
i mean ...dude my site is down and your are for no reason taking your own time for literally no reason?
then after me getting mad and again over and over saying that i have ddos protection too.. so reverse the null routing you can take your time to find your resolution whenver you want just take the god damn null routing off
    this is reply i get

    "
    Code:
    Hello,

I do see that the range that is assinged to you is a protected one. The reason that you have been nulled is due to an outbound attack coming from your server and this is what would cause the null. This would take 24 hours to make sure all attacks have stopped and if you need anything else please let us know.

    Thank you.

    oh god the fuck?
i mean its only a good woocommerce site and have been up from a year on godaddy vps and never did this happen on there ! so no it was not some script on site .. all plugins i use on woocommerce are very common and trusted and daily updated plugins!

    and
i mean its a dedicated server with dedicated network port.. so even if there was users spike.. i am not hurting any of their other client why take my site down for whole 24 hours?
what kind of resolution is that
and when they boast about providing 200gbps of ddos protection.. WTF!

never ever go for hostwinds if you care for your business and downtimes!
i am just gonna get my backup and file a refund and shift to someone else!! can someone recommend me some better server that can assure me not to do this shit!

shut shitty support and resolution should be enough to just put them in shitlist... !

Sucks to hear about your experience, I'll be sure to steer clear of Hostwinds myself.

Why not just go with Amazon for your hosting needs?

Hostwinds was not bad about 1,2 years ago. In fact it was quite good. I haven't used them in a while, but I sure hope yours is a isolated case and they sort it out.

BTW has Hostwinds been bought by that hosting company that buys them all? If so this would explain a lot.

i dont have much experience with clouds so i am not sure how i will get my site setuped on amazon cloud.. honestly from usage and such.. site needs only a vps.. only at very specific time it is high buyers on site.. and thats why i dont really even need cloud.. a dedicated server is suppose to be overkill for it

Yeah I suppose Amazon is not exactly non-dev friendly, setting up ec2 is like having a small stroke. Works great once you have it running though!
Anyway I'm sure people here can recommend you a legitimately good service.

    Best of luck!

I also had a bad experience with them- they did not know the procedure for hiding Whois with a uk domain.

I registered it after their live support said I could make it private, then it turned out their system would not allow it to be private.

Their support did not know why either. I had to speak to nominet in order to give their support dept the facts.

Despite it being totally their fault and despite them allowing me to register the domain with the private who is ticked and then the Whois ending up public they refused to refund me.

Personally will never use them again.

I use ovh amazon aws and hostdime
ovh/amazon for not managed and hostdime for managed
all are solid for dedicated servers
ovh vps's tend to be crap in my experience though
for vps I use vultr and digitalocean
