I finally have the ability to purchase the original name that I wanted for my blog from the person that thought of the name first lol. It is a shorter url and much better overall. My question is the blog is pretty established and I have lots of backlinks will changing the url to the new one ruin the link building and stuff that I have done? or will google have to reindex the whole site? or will it just change the domain?

why don't you keep the old blog in place and php refresh it to your new blog for the time being? this way you'll get the same amount of traffic to your new blog without ruining your old blog. might be a temp solution until you can get your seo done for your new blog.
