Hosting on VPS

Good day!
I will be building several websites in the future.
I have a few questions:

• Is it worth hosting those sites on a VPS server instead of using a Webhost?
• Is it hard to setup several sites on a VPS?
• What about security?
• Can I run other tools while still hosting websites on VPS?

After all, do you think it is worth it?

It is always recommended to keep separated your tools from your hosting. You really don't want your tool to affect the performances of your VPS.
If you are starting from scratch it is best to start on a shared web hosting to begin with once it is growing your web hosting plan will not suffice you can consider getting a VPS.
If you haven't run a VPS, it is recommended to opt for a managed VPS, so you don't have to worry about anything on your VPS. (set up, security, performances tuning)

VPS is much more expensive, one of the reason is that you have to pay cpanell licence every month. It is better to use shared hosting if you are begginer and your sites do not make enough money to cover VPS expense. Also there are VPS's that work worse than a shared hosting, especially if you cache your sites and use CDN.

Manual Host is better (VPS). Learn some basics tutoriais and profit.

I thought VPS would be way cheaper than a reliable shared hosting. The only thing with shared hosting is that you don't have the hussle of managing the server.

Thanks for your advice, I will look into it, but still don't know if it is worth the hussle.

There are a lot reliable shared hosts, just Cpanell licence is 2X more expensive than shared hosting itself. Vps is same as shared when it comes to management. You usually have support for the VPS.

at this point with just a few sites you would be better off with a shared hosting plan that lets you have add on domains or getting a reseller account so each site would have its own cPanel login.

Yes you could go VPS but if you are not sure about the settings then I would recommend going Managed.

a) There is not much difference between VPS and Shared Hosting. With the help of paid or free panel you can manage your VPS same like shared hosting but with the bonus of more resources/security and stability (always depended on the resources like your desktop and of course the hosting provider it self).
b) With Control Panel (Free or Paid) like Webuzo,cPanel,Plesk etc the website setup will be with the difficult of shared hosting (3-4 clicks and some drag&drops).
c) With the proper configurations your VPS will be more secure than any random 0.99$ shared hosting provider. However you should worry more for the security of your CMS/Script.
d) This is the best part ... VPS stands for Virtual Private Server (Virtual machine) works exactly like your computer (multi-tasks).Of course you will need more resources. Also make sure that the "tools" can run over linux otherways you will need Windows OS KVM server. But if your tools request lot of resources you better keep em separated.

BTW you can go for semi-managed support which is lot cheaper than fully managed *Most of the times you wont need 24/7 "fully managed" support at all.

After all, do you think it is worth it?
- You can always start with shared hosting which is easier and focus on your websites and banking. Once you hit the limits of your plan (hopefully you will be earning enough) you can move to VPS.

Indeed if the VPS's are on 10 year old machine and with lack of any configuration it will be slower than shared hosting. Regarding the price... well... nothing can beat the well known headache for one penny

Totally agree. Running your own unmanaged vps is a big responsibility. Managed is better if you can afford, if not then stick with a decent shared host to begin with.

And if you do go for managed vps or shared hostthen I can personally vouch for these guys.

Pretty much the same as what the above guys have said. If you do decide to go VPS and manage it yourself might take a look at centminmod dot com The owner of the site has made a script that helps you manage your vps and even setup and manage multiple wordpress sites on the same vps. It's still all command line stuff but most of the VPS I run wordpress on run this setup. Plus if you are expecting lots of traffic a lot of VPS providers offer DDOS protected ips for $3.00 - $5.00 a month so totally worth it, but you have to put in the time to learn Linux and system administration and keep everything up to date.

You really have a lot of options here best of luck.

I would strongly recommend of you hosting your websites on a VPS with couple of additional ips just in case and they dont cost much.

Not only you will have full control of everything that is going on in your environment you will also have your own dedicated IP`s ( Which you can use for your own nameservers - websites etc ) and dedicated resources instead of a shared hosting where you share your website with numerous others on the same ip address with also very limited resources and server side modification capabilities.

If you are beginner in the hosting then I would suggest, go with shared hosting service. On reseller service plan, you can host multiple sites on it. You can go with VPS but you will need to setup the VPS by your own as well as you will need to create and manage account. VPS by your own.

You can assign the resources, disk space to the sites as per your need on VPS. While on shared hosting service, plans are fixed in which resources and disk space is fixed.

If you will go with shared hosting service, everything will be managed by your host, just you will need to build he site and will need to upload the contents. Shared hosting service has it's own security setup while on VPS, you will need to manage the server security by your own.

You can run tools on VPS as it's your own server but can not run it on shared hosting server because shared hosting server has various security restriction.

So I would suggest, if you are beginner then go with shared hosting else you can go with VPS.

VPS are very cheap now a days so if you want to host more than one websites then you must use vps servers. Many provider are giving fully managed vps servers on which they used to setup and migrate sites as well. As far as your query about application hosting then I suggest to use a separate server for hosting and application.

Don't go VPS unless you know what you're doing. There are tons of shared hosting where you can start out, pay less and have it actually managed. Then *MOST* *GOOD* hosts will migrate you to a VPS for free when you're ready.

Web hosting will always be the best option buddy. Like others have said, providers usually offer free migration, too

The next time you say that make sure that you have proofs

VPS are easy to manage especially if the provider provide at least semi-managed support then is plug & play.
Needless to say that VPS perform better and can be tweeked better that any Shared Hosting. Especially if you want to go behind nginx or litespeed ot whatever.

As you are new to this hosting business, I would suggest you to go with shared hosting, as it is the most affordable web hosting service. Go with VPS hosting only if the sites require dedicated resources and more traffic, as VPS is more costly to go with.
