last time location is a huge factor for ranking site, but now is it still the same? 2 years back I was using hostgator to build my site (asia), sadly the rank for my country search engine is hell low. I doubt if I want to do US niche I should care where my server is located, is it correct?

I have different websites in different locations and the location is not a factor for me. It really depends on the content.

I am with innozemec on this issue. If you're a website getting enough traffic where it's relevant to rank in multiple locale specific search engines, take a look at implementing something like this:

MaxMind and their IP geolocation database can be used to 301 redirect visitors from various IPs to their proper ccTLD (.us, .co.uk, etc.). Alternatively, for a fairly robust local database, check out this:

GEO specific hosting is critical for fast speeds when you are dealing with Asia in general. It is also important for local SEO since it
helps Google include your website in their localized search results. Does it still matter? Yes. But it is not the end all of techniques and
does not guarantee you ranking above competition not using local SEO.

Location is still vital for ranking on Google..
People wanting to rank on Google Netherlands should get links from Netherlands.
Google Spain should get links from Spain
Google U.S should get links from U.S
Google U.K should get links from U.K sites.
