Ok , Say if a client put up a temporary wordpress blog and started to rank for keywords. If he changed his website from a wordpress blog over to a custom website would he lose the keyword rankings?

Yes unless all the pages in the new site matched (had the same name) as the old site. The root (www.zzz.fff) should be ok because that would be the same.

To ensure you don't lose rankings you should (if you can't keep the name the same) use a 301 permanent redirect from the old page to the new page. Assuming this site doesn't have thousands of pages (you said it's new) then putting them in .htaccess will work fine.

Plan it carefully and test every link to make sure they're redirected correctly. You may want to get someone to do it if you don't know what you're doing.
