Hosting For Intermittently High Traffic Site

I'm starting a site that will host an info product. I will be getting traffic from large email lists through JV's and affiliates. Since these forms of marketing can generate a lot of traffic around the same time I don't know how serious I need to get with my website hosting. What would be recommended? Do I need to go VPS?

I don't want to get 3.99/mo godaddy hosting and have users not be able to view the site because so much traffic was sent there. The info product will have a launch so it's feasible that a million people could get an email directing them to the site at the same time... not that they'd open or click at the same time.

Price is important but I will pay what is required for good performance.

Yes at the very least i would go with a VPS server. I would start off with 2 gb ram. Talk with the host before you launch your marketing and they should be able to monitor and you can set up an agreement before hand. If you are starting to max out that set up to have an upgrade done so your site doesnt go down.

After your first blast that will give you a good idea of what you need to be able to handle that load.

If you have the budget then Ideal would be dedicated server.

Does anyone use amazon web hosting? I'm not even sure what they offer for web hosting. I'm more familiar with using them for long term storage and web services but all of those are pay by usage so maybe they have something like that? That would be the best since my site might sit mostly unused outside of product releases times.
