Hosting Domain with VPS

Hi,

I am looking at building a couple of new websites in Wordpress. Instead of buying separate hosting, is it possible to host domains on a VPS?

If so can anyone recommend a plan, and tell me how many small/ medium websites on average a basic VPS could host?

Is it easy to set up with Cpanel and build wordpress etc?

You can buy managed VPS hosting so the hosting company takes care of setting up everything, you just use cpanel normally as you would with shared hosting.
Unmanaged VPS is cheaper but you need to set up everything yourself.

Use Cloudways and buy a Vultr server, its easy to setup, and start with a 768MB memory plan. You can always scale up later, cheap and fast Wordpress hosting for small and medium sites. You can install a couple of sites on this startup vps, or install a multisite WP on it to save memory and maintenance time, multisite wp needs a bit more learning but a great way to not work a lot on the maintenance bit .. =)

If you want cpanel look to get a vps with at least 1 GB of ram

Cpanel is nice, but at Cloudways it is very easy to setup a server and very easy to setup wordpress, so no need to spend the extra money for Cpanel.

Well as mentioned earlier you can always go with the managed VPS solution in case you do not want to deal hassle of maintaining server on your own. This
may or may not include using CPanel.

However if you are not afraid of maintaining your own VPS and have basic knowledge of linux. I would suggest try to use something like "Centminmod". It has
built in wordpress installer and load of option for you. As for the provideR I would say their are many like: ramnode,vultr,digitalocean for unmanaged vps just make
sure they are trusted and have location of server which you want.

As for how many site you can run. This is not something which can be quantified easily. It solely depended on the type of scripts you are running and load on them
you many not be able to host one high traffic website in single VPS if they have high number of concurrent users connecting to vps, but you might be able to run upto
5 to 10 or more wp sites(these are just random numbers) with proper optimization.

I'd suggest:

1. Start with 512Mb ram vps, with 1 core,ssd storage (provided that your provider give you option to upgrade vps easily to higher resources).
2. Try to run one of the websites which you want to move to vps see how it performs and note the resource usage like RAM,CPU utilization.
3. After performing the step 2 you will have a gauge of how much resources your single website consume and that way you can figure out how
many sites you can move to your vps and what resources you need to increase if they are not enough.

You can also host multiple websites on shared hosting. Saves you from breaking your head over learning how to use a VPS or pay much more than your budget.

If this is the first time using a VPS I would recommend getting a managed VPS account to start. This way you can use support to help get everything set up and going.

To answer your question yes its easy to add new sites and hosting accounts using cPanel.

As far as how many there is a few factors that will go into play here. What size vps account you have and how big the sites are that you are loading.

You don't really need a "Managed VPS" , some providers charge arm and leg for "managed hosting" , what you need actually is semi-managed hosting.
With Semi-managed hosting you will receive ready for use VPS with preinstalled WHM/cPanel (or any other panel ) and the rest are just like using Shared Hosting plan .
Depending on the websites & traffic you may or may not ... host 10 websites under 1GB of RAM.
We recommend 2GB of RAM for installation with cPanel and ~10websites on it.

I'm not recommending any host to you but I can tell you approx how much you need to spend per month for your project.
Domain name = $10/year (Sometime you can get discount)
Standard VPS = $15/month
cPanel for VPS = $14
Wordpress = Free

So it total $10 + $15 + $14 = $39 first month then $29 from next month because you don't need to pay $10 for domain monthly.

here are many "reasonable" and "practical" ways to go about hosting a website using your domain name on a VPS running Ubuntu. In regards to setting up a Nameserver.... Just don't do that use the free dns services offered by most registrars or use a service like Afraid.org or Cloudflare to handle DNS
