Hostgator uses Softlayer

I've been using softlayer for a bit now. They do this hourly rental thing that is amazing for my needs.
I was talking to Hostgator support and the guy tell's me their dataserver is Softlayer.
I thought that was interesting and wanted to share.

I thought they use The Planet.

They got taken over by Softlayer as far as I know in the last few months (go to theplanet.com)

theplanet was purchased by softlayer 3 months ago I belive. The Hostgator rep also said they used to use theplanet but now it's softlayer.

As far as I know ThePlanet was Softlayer brand from pretty long time ago... They had some partnership with them and now Softlayer decide to rebrand ThePlanet which is big surprise.
Softlayer seem to try to repair their reputation and prevent ThePlanet becoming more powerfull in one move.

And yes, Hostgator as many other budget hosting companies do not own DC to cut the cost.

Softlayer has owned a majority share in ThePlanet for approximately 2 years now. However, ThePlanet's brand image was more wellknown than softlayer's, and softlayer decided to takeover ThePlanet and bought them out totally.

Employees of ThePlanet had approximately 48 hours notice they were being taken over.
