Today my site was suspended for High CPU usage, possible reasons being high traffic as soon as an event is screened in my site.
I am making close to 50-60$ per day using that site. But I am getting some crazy traffic and is increasing each day.
Host gator suspended the site saying it was suspended due to high CPU usage and they says they want my IP address being sent to them as reply to the ticket email they mailed me.
When I tried going to my site it is showing
    Code:
You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I am just wondering should I go for a dedicated server because of its high overload during certain time?

Could someone clarify what figure would be classed as high CPU usage?

I am having the Baby Plan and today I got more than 1000visitors to my site.
The problem is during certain period of time in the day(because I am covering an event and posting it in my site), it overloads during that time.
I chatted with the hostgator support and they told me
    Code:
    Hello,

I apologize, but I was forced to suspend the script "/mypath/" as it was causing a high load on the server, and due to the nature of the problem, I forced to take immediate action for the health of the server. Based on your domain's raw access logs, I believe that this is caused by the large number of page not found errors that you have, which with the rewrite rules that you have in place, is causing your main page to be loaded several times, very quickly causing the problem. I would recommend that you review these (which can be done through cPanel) and correct any links or upload any missing files that would be the cause. If you reply back to this with your IP address ([URL]http://www.hostgator.com/ip.shtml[/URL]) we will be more than happy to go ahead enable HTTP access for you, so that you can safely work on the script without it causing further issues. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

Top Page Not Found (404) Errors:
         61 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/fancybox/fancybox.css HTTP/
         63 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/fancybox/fancybox.js HTTP/
         64 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/superfish/jquery.supersubs.js HTTP/
         65 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/superfish/jquery.superfish.js HTTP/
         70 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/superfish/jquery.hoverintent.js HTTP/
         71 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/misc/fade.js HTTP/
         75 GET /wp-content/themes/default/features/jquery.min.js HTTP/
        151 GET /favicon.ico HTTP/
        538 GET /wp-content/themes/video-elements/images/favicon.ico HTTP/
        738 GET /wp-content/themes/video-elements/images/body-bg.jpg HTTP/
And then I replied back and I got this reply
    Code:
    Hello,

You need to correct the extensive number of 404 errors which are being created by people accessing your site.
Whether this involves replacing missing files, modifying your theme to not reference missing files, modifying your posts if the references are in there, or disabling plugins is dependent on the specific configuration of your site, as it could potentially be any of the listed reasons. Have you attempted to investigate this issue by logging into your cPanel or WordPress and locating where these file references are occurring within your site?
I dont know what am I supposed to do now?

That is why i don't use wp. Even super cache is not enough for a shared if you have more than 1000 users.

Only 1k users and their CPU gets 50%~ load? Sad. I'm glad I never used GoDaddy hosting, it seems like shit.

It could be the script is not optimize to perform quickly. If this is the case then cache the pages but it could also be a memory issue especially if your site is database heavy.

I recommend a VPS before dedicated. With VPS you can get hands on before going dedicated. Alot of dedicated services charge heavily for technical/managed support and it's best to run your own server without the managed support. You will save money this way.

If you do decide to go VPS then get around 2-4 gigs of memory and learn how to allocated this for database usage.

Hostgator is not for people who get decent traffic with database heavy website scripts.

1k visits is nothing. I have run a site on the medium personal plan with 10k+ visits a day without an issue. And that is on a database driven site with 2k+ pages.

What type of content are you providing? If I was you, I would move from Wordpress anyway and possibly get a custom CMS to better suit your needs, and to cut down on your heavy load.

If you read hostgator terms and conditions, you will see that if your site uses more than 1% of resource usage then they have grounds to shutdown your site.

Actually I am getting 1k visitors per hour it seems especially during peak hours.Daily traffic may go upto 10K per day sometimes. Now they've disabled my site again.I am losing my money also each hour if they dont activate it.
Can you suggest me some good VPS which is cheap.
Now I've got another email from them stating I need to disable post thumbnails and I did and that the server is overloading again.
Do not know what to do in the meantime.I am at least losing some of my money every hour. Can I redirect my site to another blog spot site in the meanwhile while I get my site fixed and then move servers.
Will I be able to get all my posts, thumbnails and all plugins moved after my server has been moved?

Some VPS can be setup in 2 hours. It just depends on how busy the web hosting company is? As far as redirecting your site, this is possible with Yahoo Registrar and/or I guess a meta redirect on the pages they are going to might work if you want to send traffic to another blog post in the mean while. I've been through this process numerous of times and if you have to be down for 4 hours or more you will still be able to regain all your traffic back in about 6-8 days but you will not completely lose all traffic while your website is down, especially if it's from search engines.

    I recommend
    Code:
    http://empire-hosting.net/
. This is the only VPS hosting company I was with before I went dedicated so I can't recommend anymore. This was a cool place to be but once your site is really growing a dedicated will be the way to go. The guy at
    Code:
    http://empire-hosting.net/
works around the clock so if you was to contact him tonight he probably can have you hooked up in about 2 hours or so.

Or you can also look into cloud hosting with rack space cloud. Not really sure on what you need in your server environment but if they have what you need you can be up almost instantly after they verify credit card.

There are numerous ways on how to do this but if you're getting 10,000 visitors a day then a few hours of downtime shouldn't hurt your bottom line instantly and hopefully you have a backup.

have you installed any new plugins recently? you may have a plugin that continues executing without finishing, i recently had this problem and a certain hosting company almost canned my ass, i had already paid for the year used only 3 months and they cut my sites off due to high cpu use, so i told them i knew what it was, and i pretty much did, went in deleted the suspect plugins and they never bothered me again. I would upgrade to a vps if i were you.

I have installed few plugins like post thumbnails, feedjit, statpress,wp cumulus etc.
But yesterday I submitted my site to 3500directories using an automatic Directory submitter(not sure that may be the problem).
Yes I disabled my post thumbnails plugin, but as I am using Video elements theme,my site wont work without post thumbnails.
They told me to disable post thumbnail plugin,I did,but however that didnt solve the issue either. My CPU usage overload occurs during certain peak hours only and that too all of a sudden in a rush.
    I checked the site
    Code:
    http://empire-hosting.net/
Can you suggest me which plan should I use for this hosting plan?
I just want to host one site and my chief problem is traffic overload during certain peak hours.Sometimes all of a sudden a sudden surge in the traffic will come during certain hours and that may cause High CPU overload.
Can you explain to me a brief difference between Dedicated server and a VPS,that'll help too.
And one more thing-I am mainly getting my traffic from youtube and other means not through Search engines. But also get few traffic from search engines too.
    Thanks.

Yeah I've pushed 3k visitors in less than 24 hours with wordpress installed on a HG baby plan and didn't get any complaints from HG. Are you streaming video or something? That could be the issue.

I am not streaming any video, but I am just embedding few videos from 3rd party sites like youtube, dailymotion etc.
They said that their servers are overloaded.
I changed my theme to egamer theme and disabled the post thumbnails, but site is all messed up and when I tries to display more than 6posts in the home page, its showing-" Sorry, the page your requested could not be found, or no longer exists."

    .
Waiting to see what will happen tomorow.
But can you tell me do I need a VPS or a dedicated server for this?

When you go into your cpanel, What is the load stats?

And to be 100% honest. You could likely run this on a different shared host, Maybe even a reseller.

Dedicated server is an actual server while VPS is a virtual server, you use them for the same thing but a dedicated is more powerful yet more expensive.
