[Hostgator] Heavy CPU problems. Who's responsible for this?

Hey! I hope someone could help me out here

I am having serious problems with my hosting (hostgator)
I have an image based website (2400 images). With 200K Page visits / day. 10K Uniqiue visits / day.
First I had a wordpress with alot plugins and it caused heavy CPU overload. So I hired a private coder to code the site for me.
(In the hope that would solve the cpu issues) Still having the same issues Medium/High CPU overload. (cpu overload = db shutdown)


First : Is it normal that with this kind of traffic cpu overloads on shared hosting? (it isn't that much right?)
Second : Could someone that know something from php hit me up. So we can check if the website is fully optimised.
What are you thoughts on this matter guys?

Ps: Hostgator may or may not be so good as everyone thought.

You are having 200k Pageloads/day with self hosted images? That is a lot of work for shared hosting.
 
get a VPS according to your needs. You have big stats.
 
Really? Are this Big stats..?

I think many people are pushing way more traffic on shared hosting... I think my Database and website aren't fully optimised.

Anyone more thoughts?
 
Im not really an expert in databases, but I do think 200k page loads a day is a lot for a shared hosting plan. I would try a VPS, but please if anyone else knows different please say.
 
I've got a VPS now, Level 3 hostgator.
But it doesn't seem to be working.
The loads are about 4.10 now. Which is not so good, because these are not my peak hours.

Edit: I've seen the Loads go up to 82..

Shared servers generally have serious computing and memory resources. If you're killing the load on a shared server, you'll likely do the same on a lower end VPS. Those traffic numbers are substantial, so you likely need a bigger server to handle it. Hostgator's VPS seem like a joke to me, so I'd recommend going elsewhere.
 
You have out grown shared hosting, you need a dedicated server for this type of load and traffic.
 
Get a VPS hosting, trust me. You have a huge amount of traffic, I don't think Shared hosting is a suitable choice for your website.

Let assume each page is 300Kb with photo, 200k page load it will be 200*300 MB or 60GB bandwidth each day.
Very normal for over use issues on share hosting.
 
I don't really think its that much... if you do the math thats 2.314 views a second on average - how many views do you get during peaktimes? Do you use a CDN?

Shared hosting is no good for your website and your needs, I would say you should switch to VPS. On the other hand you may try to optimize your website, yet with that many images and visitors you would exceed limits as it obviously has way too many entry processes.

I've tried VPS but even they couldn't handle the load... So now I'm on Dedicated server. I still have the feeling I shouldn't be on such a monster but it works now and I'm happy that my website is online for more than 5 hours. Also installed cache plugin so the server loads are really low now on my dedicated.

Well I hope you use gzip compression etc.. this would boost your website :)
 
I'd use a CDN it helps my site a lot I have about 160k and 3000 images. A CDN is cheap and speeds the site up a lot!

I would love to help you out

I would recommend you get in a on mid-range VPS, we can setup a custom web server running nginx on the frontend, and varnish/apache on the backend. I think the varnish caching will greatly help your site. I would also recommend we play with your compression settings and reduce image compression, our VPS's come with big pipes so the extra bandwidth won't be a problem.


We are also a cloudflare optimized partner, and so we can set you up with their CDN to further increase page loads, it will actually be faster than normal cloudflare because you will be using railgun

check all your plugins and when i comes to vps, there are 100 times better options outside selling 8gb vps for $30 or 16gb for $40.
 
YOu should definitely get a CDN like MaxCDN. You can use shared hosting if you use a good CDN.

Shared hosting lasted much longer than it should have for you. VPS hosting from HG would be a bad choice most likely due to overselling as well. Dedicated is you're only real option.

You get the benefits of being able to optimize it to an extreme level though. It should last you for another 400k+ visitors/day depending on the specs.
 
i also run a site like yours with about 10x the images you have and it was way too much for me so i went onto there dedicated servers and its really fast now. but if your not making enough money for the dedi server then youll just have to put up with it
