Hostgator Free SSL?

Starting July 2018 chrome (sonofabitch) is going to show all websites that don't have an SSL as insecure or whatever. Plus having an SSL supposedly helps ranking.

I have 5 websites hosted with hostgator. I have another 1,5 year paid on my (shared) hosting package.

It seems that in order to install an SSL on Hostgator it costs like $30+ bucks, per site, per year. Motherfucker!!! Or if you buy the SSL elsewhere you have to pay $10 to Hostgator for installation. I would imagine you'd have to pay $10 per site.

I quote: "However, if you’re a HostGator customer who doesn’t have a SSL yet, there is no need to worry about this change. HostGator customers without a SSL certificate will be receiving a free one this July to comply with Google Chrome’s new requirements."

I'm lost right now. I don't know anything about SSLs, but I know some hosting providers give free SSLs and stuff. I will absolutely NOT pay $30 dollars per site per year for SSL to Hostgator. I'll bail on them so fast their head will spin.

No. Actually can I get your thoughts on the situation? Is Hostgator really going to provide free SSL for all sites hosted with them that don't have an SSL yet? And if they are, does that go for people hosting their sites with them, or having their domain names with them, or both? Because my domains are on Namechap, not Hostgator.

Other hosts give free SSL without having a domain registered with them. I'm pretty sure you'll be just fine. Once SSL is applied you should change your URL to https in WordPress general settings. You should also make sure to do a redirect https://ca.godaddy.com/help/redirect-my-wordpress-website-to-https-in-cpanel-hosting-27871

Or just use a plugin.

Cloudflare is another option if you want to get SSL yourself without relying on your host. It takes a few extra steps but it's pretty easy.
 
Hostgator does give a free SSL for the primary domain if you get a business account. If you need any help i'd be happy to assist you with it.
 
You could always reach out and see what they say. They could always give you a free cpanel assigned ssl. Another options is you could always move away from them and ask for a refund.

I moved a lot of my sites to @HudsonWebServices Haste Hosting and get free SSL there plus better hosting and much better support.

I'd not wish Hostgator on my enemies, well actually....... :)
 
They said it was FREE, so it probably will be, but as @MisterF said you might want to look for new hosting, lots of better solutions out there these days.

Well. I have seen host-gator even charge 10$ to install SSL on their hosting.
 
So Hostgator came through. All of my sites (5 of them) can now be accessed with HTTPS, all good.

Some of the sites are wordpress, others are not. What I'm wondering is, is there anything I need to do now to make the HTTPS really work properly.

Something about images making them https? Or something in the htaccess file?
 
First, probably you should redirect all your visitors to https. You can use these lines on top of your .htaccess file:

Please notice that you need to change example.com above with your own domain.

Next, you need to edit image url attached to your website pages. Such as:

becomes,

<img href="https://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/xxx" />
 
Yes, the simple way around this is just to use Cloudflare's shared SSL certificate. It provides the aesthetics of an SSL certificate while not being as secure (but it will suffice for 99.999% cases)
