I have seen this happen with transient database errors - if you are on a shared hosting account at hostgator, then it could be one of many servers in several geographic locations that is having the problem.
For future reference - look at the Account Information in the bottom left of your cpanel. Then bookmark the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2082 login. If your server is functional, you will always be able to reach your server login that way.
That will bring up the hostgator support chat function. They will always be able to check the status of your server - and I've never been charged a thing for this.
