Host under DDoS attack since Friday

The company that hosts and manages my VPS has been under DDoS since Friday and my websites are at times coming to a crawl. Conversions we're good over weekend but are quite poor today.

My question though is what can/should a host be doing to protect themselves against these attacks and - if they were worth their money, would this attack have mitigated and protected against by now?

Is it Bluehost or another EIG owned company? My feeling is that this particular company is known for DDoS attacks which we later find out weren't... I think Bluehost gets the business and reco's it does because of the generous affiliate compensation but the service is awful.

Its a UK company called Smart Hosting or bestwebhosting.co.uk

It's my understanding that you can't actively protect against a DDoS attack since it's hundreds, or thousands of computers at once pinging a service every second using a list of proxies. So I mean, they can't protect FROM it, and shouldn't be punished for not being able to protect themselves.

But, you're their customer and your money and time is yours so if you feel that the DDoS attacks aren't going to help your business, but other services would, you're free to move.
