Hopeless Insomniac

daniellephoto,

I can't sleep either, but my insomnia is self-inflicted. I have trained myself to survive on less sleep.

We spend a third of our lives doing it, sleeping that is, and I cannot afford the wasted time.

Margaret Thatcher, Napoleon, Florence Nightingale, Michelangelo and Thomas Edison famously boasted that they required only four hours sleep and more recently, Jay Leno, Madonna and Martha Stewart survive on four hours with Bill Clinton requiring five to six hours only and Leonardo Da Vinci 15 minutes every four hours.

After an initial period where I looked like sh*t, I now start work at 06.00 and work through until 23.00. Grab an hour or two and then I'm back at the computer working through the night until early morning.

Working from home enables me to do this and, as I'm self-employed, I can always crash if I need a bit of extra sleep, although that rarely happens.

The upside is, I get done twice as much as everyone else...and that means more money.

I truly believe we waste a lot of time sleeping.

I also find the best sleep of my life comes after great sex.

Meditation helps. If you don't know how to do it properly - go and learn. It is a skill and a valuable one, but it takes time to learn.
Do something you hate if you can't sleep - then your mind says no.. and you get tired..
Make sure your sleeping enviroment isn't too light, cold, hot or stuffy
make your sleeping enviroment your sleeping enviroment. not your fucking office tv room or some place you use every day. Make the bed room your place for two things. Sleeping and sex. :)
Try changing your bedclothes and or bed.
Try a sleep mask
If you lived in Thailand, I'd suggest going for an hours thai massage. That will get you drowsy for sure!
I used to know someone that needed music or tv to sleep...
Drugs are bad, as they confuse your body. Try to reduce them slowly and switch to some homeopathic stuff such as lavendar etc.
Dietary problems could be a contributing factor. - are you sensitve to caffeine ??
And last but not least - remember and close your eyes..:P

Try this: Instead of trying to force yourself to fall asleep, force yourself to stay awake. Seriously. Sometimes when I can't sleep I'll lay there and just keep my eyes open in the dark. A lot of times before I know it, it's hard to stay awake. Kind of a reverse tactic.

I know that I have the same problem if I do not break away from the computer I will never stop working. You definately more activity before bed. You need to find someway to burn out before bed, but would not recommend working out. Try sitting quietly somewhere and reading. If you do not like to read then that is even better. Maybe even watch tv. I like to pick something without much plot to it. History Channel,Discovery, etc. If I catch a movie I usually get stuck watching the whole thing until 2am. Also don't drink alchohol. That can keep you up, but the doobie may work.
