yeah they still “work”, but i see them more like a trust stabilizer now. on a lot of sites links don’t instantly push you up unless the page is already decent (intent matched, good content, solid internal links). where they help a ton is keeping stuff from wobbling during updates -- like you said, fewer random drops + faster recoveries. for me, links move positions mostly in tougher niches (money, saas, affiliates) and on competitive serps; in easier niches they feel more like insurance + indexing/credibility. lately it feels like google is pickier: fewer links needed if the page is genuinely best answer, but if you’re in a crowded space, not having links is still a ceiling.
