I had been building links to the homepage of my site and it moved to page 3 but then it got stuck there for a while.

But for the past couple of days, the homepage has disappeared from the serps. but one of the inner pages is ranking on page 5 for the same keyword.

I am not sure what's going on here? google dance? penalty? What should I do at this point?

Sounds like a penalty to me. The sudden drop of >30 in the SERPs site-wide is often a penalty. Do you have the site listed in Google Search Console? If so, check for a warning. What else is still indexed? (Try site:www.yoursitehere.com in Google.) Where does it rank when you search for the page title?

Hello OP, have sent you an advice via PM. Maybe it helps you :)

the homepage is still indexed, if I do site: search, the first result is the homepage. I dont have search console.

That's obviously a penalty. You should check your GWT and see what kind of penalty you got then decided from there.

You need check the quality of links you've been building...as good/high quality links can get you ranked..bad/spammy/low quality links can get you banned!

pardon me for hijacking this thread: when i do site:http://xxx.com in google I see my "archives" listed as well, is this right thing?

edit: just checked my yoast settings and default is to allow indexing of archives, ive switched off after reading archives can be classed as dup content, why is this not default setting on yoast surprises me!

It might be a bug, some of my websites have this issue also. When I search for site:mywebsite.com it's not there and when I search without "site:" it's there. It scared the crap out of me when I first saw this but it's not effecting my rankings or traffic. Perhaps it's happening for you too.

Do you have an internal page with the same content as the home page?

When you create a Wordpress page to have as home for instance, you get duplicate content. This may cause the home to be deindexed.

Check your homepage status in SEO quake bar. is your homepage index or not?

bartosimpsonio,

I think you might have a point there. The homepage was written by me and it's completely unique, there is just some keyword stuffing which I will remove shortly.
The inner pages were written by someone else. They are basically saying the same thing over and over
for example
We provide services to the residents of Ohio
We offer services to the residents of Missouri
Our company provides services to the residents of Arkansas

I kept telling him to stop doing that, but he wrote all the pages like this.

Again, my homepage has disappeared from the SERPS. it was on page 3 before. Now an inner page is ranking bottom of page 5.
What do you think I should do?
By the way, my backlinks are high quality links from legit newspaper sites, plus a few blog comments. I don't think my backlinks are the problem.

This happens to anyone who builds links. It's just the Google dance. I have had sites bounce between rank 20 - 180 over 15 times in a single day.

Just give it a couple of days and make sure you're not spamming exact match anchors. It might come back stronger, the same or in a worse spot than before.

"Site wide penalty" ? Really? He clearly states it's just the home page and the inner page is still ranking.

He says "one of the inner pages is ranking on page 5 for the same keyword."

Some penalties involve de-indexing. Some are a 3-4 page drop in the rankings. Seeing a site with decent ranks suddenly have its best ranking on page 5 suggests to me a site-wide penalty.
