Wow. When you think FB and TWITTER killed Digg and you think it's over for Digg, they get BOUGHT OUT!!

Digg, once the darling of start-up world, has sold its brand and its Web site to the New York-based technology company Betaworks. The deal closes the final chapter on the story of Digg?s meteoric rise and ultimate decline.

In a blog post announcing the deal, Betaworks ? which makes the popular app News.me ? said it will be returning the company to its roots.

$500,000? Google offered $200 million for it 4 years ago.

Wow, its shocking how little its being sold for. I don't see how the site could possibly be valued at a mere $500,000
Even if they just tossed adsense on the site, surely it would make quite a bit ( and enough to be worth more than that).

Wow.

I read about that this morning, aniway the founder is happy, that is what he said XD

It went for more than 500,000.

That was for the infrastructure. But the actual site.
Betaworks

today, including the domain, code, data and all the traffic for between $500k and $725k.
There seems to be a lot of disparity between what people define as the core and the business.

It is good that old are trying to come back again to their own position that is been captured by someone else. So best of luck to those.

Does anybody else fondly remember the days when you could throw up a quick crap blog, put up three articles, bookmark the article using Digg, and your useless and poorly written farticle would immediately be on the front page of Google's results for your keyword -often WAY at the top?

Good times. Those retarded commissions financed a lot of weed back then.

i read a article recently saying digg owner is one of the top 10 adsense earning sites why would he sell for 500k

Digg died a couple of years ago, when they ran off their core, everything since then has been marketers....

I was surprised to read that 200 users were responsible for 90% of the content on Digg.

Wow.

Couple dozen employees in SF = $$millions in payroll alone.

holy cow! too bad they didn't take the 200 mil from google. :/ But thats still a hefty chunk of change. Looks like beta works just picked up the scarps for 500,000

Read an interview where the founder said his business was growing and growing and thought he couldn't be touched and is why he refused google's 200 million offer.

Let this be a lesson to all that the internet is a game of trends. If your site is doing well this year, doesn't mean it will next year. Consider all options.
