Hello everyone. I work in the project management tools niche and was checking various relevant prompts on Chatgpt. I was very surprised to see tools I'd never heard of in the sources, with low trust. There were even pages on free blogging platforms, on subdomains. However, they significantly influenced Chatgpt's rankings and had no external links to these pages. What other factors influence rankings? I doubt a project management tool would place purely PBN links on its pages and block them from Ahrefs indexing, as is sometimes done in gray and black hat niches.

Its probably more from reddit, and various random web sources, just to keep it as unbiased as it likes to try and be as possible. It has a good imagination, but its not accurate at all.

I think the thing that influences it is really long term posts on socials like reddit, and forums too i've noticed.

So how did the text end up there on a free blogging platform on a subdomain? Without any links or anything else? There's clearly some kind of algorithm that selects these sources?

ChatGPT's sources aren't ranked by traditional SEO; they're pulled from its training data and real-time indexing of lesser-known but contextually relevant pages. A page can rank in ChatGPT responses if it's semantically dense and matches the query intent, even with zero backlinks. This is why low-authority, niche-specific content often appears—it's about information freshness and topical alignment, not domain authority.

Have we not moved on from trying to "guess" at best someone elses algo? lol Especially one, that would probably be beyond your capacity to comprehend and implement exploitations for if you really got access to it? Just concentrate on content. Behind all the bs of whatever search or ai comes along and scrapes the web for content, you can be pretty sure its those with the best representation of content in the niche that get the traffic. Thats what I found with my my main site in the niche i'm in. All my other sites that had poor content done poorly. I gave it one last smart shot again, and this time i hit homerun in a niche, that i'm actually interested in (interested in slightly would be an understatment! :D)

Stick to your content rollout plan, and marketing that content above all. Ai and search will catch up with you when you make the right time. If a poor link can make it, your great site in the niche, or whetever your content is will flourish.

This is all great, but how is it that ChatGPT has one source and Google has another? Why does ChatGPT consider other pages authoritative? Based on what? Content is all very well, but external factors won't put you first in competitive niches, especially in Google and Gemini. Well, "poor content" is not an exact concept. The algorithm of AI action is understandable; you can promote pages in Google search results, and this is all AI.

The funniest thing is that this article is AI content, this article is in sources in many prompts on our niche) ones(dot)com/blog/top-gantt-chart-tools-comparison/ Moreover, it is a very poorly written AI article, with a weak prompt.

I’ve noticed the same. ChatGPT doesn’t rank pages the way Google does, it sometimes treats any content that looks authoritative or matches patterns in training data as “credible,” even if there are no backlinks or external signals. Relevance, freshness, and structured content can skew its outputs more than traditional SEO metrics.

It’s true that many factors beyond backlinks influence rankings. These include content relevance, user engagement, on-page SEO, and technical performance (like site speed and mobile optimization). Internal linking and content freshness also play a role. For tools in a niche like project management, user reviews and social proof can contribute to rankings as well. Google increasingly values content quality, expertise, and authority over just traditional link-building tactics.
