Hit by Cryptowall 3.0

Sorry if this is the wrong place, I don't know where to post it.

I do a lot of video work, just got hit by this Cryptowall 3.0 virus. Seems to be in every folder, anyone have experience actually removing this without losing all their files/paying?

Unfortunately, there is no way to recover your files. You *could* try to attempt to use Shadow Explorer (http://www.malwarekillers.com/recover-files-encrypted-cryptowall-cryptodefense/) to recover older versions of the files. Or an application to recover deleted files (https://www.piriform.com/recuva). However, these won't help with large files (which I suspect you lost since you do video work) and also their effectivity depends on the version of the cryptowall malware.

You're SOL, I'm afraid :( It's kind of the worst kind of malware you could get.
 
Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I will keep my main computer offline forever following this disaster. I have backups of most of my stuff, but probably lost a good week of after effects work, invoices bla bla bal. At least now I know I can go get a case of brewskis and reinstall everything. Cheers!
 
Just wondering, how much are they asking for to unlock the files?
 
I had a large drive (1Tb) take a dump. I tried every forensic recovery method I knew of except pulling the discs, but the hardware failure frustrated them all. It was a drive that exchanging the daughter board would not work. I tried Recuva and it failed. EaseUS Data Recovery allowed me to recover the files, including files I had overwritten. Many of the files were video files. It might work to recover unencrypted but erased files for you.

What does cryptowall do anyway? Do you remember the website you got infected from?
 
I am here with the serious question.. I have also been affected by this threat but now I see that recovering affected data is not the most important issue for me. It seems that I can't remove Cryptowall and its files. What program you were using when fixing your computer?
 
If i recall, Kaspersky and some other security vendors managed to hack/reverse engineer the 'mother' server of a type of malware similar to Cryptowall. They released the private keys so you could use them to decrypt your files. Hopefully some white knight will do the same for cryptowall eventually.

If recovering data is not that importnant I would format all your disks and reinstall system.

Out of curiosity, do you know how did you get it in first place?
 
how many $$$ do you have to pay for unlock your files?
