Amazon has started coming down really hard on this suing both the providers and their customers.
As a result of this abuse Amazon has downgraded their importance.

Interesting Gringo, can i ask what tactics you use to rank your books as top of the charts in the abscence of reviews?

Hi,
It is a lot harder to rank now with a new account since Amazon updated their terms and people that try to do so using paid reviews and their providers are being sued by Amazon.
I am fortunate in that I had built up a reader base / authority before the updates, so Amazon give my books prominence automatically.
The key is to build up your author authority and reader base, the easiest way to do this is by keyword research that enables you to rank easily for books people actually want to buy. Once your book gets traction, turn it into a series. There are plenty of threads on here how to do that.
