On site I saw highlighted keywords in bold font containing link that lead to the same site. Is this really necessary? Please let me know.

It's not a necessity. But search engines pay special attention to page text that is highlighted or given special formatting. As for the internal links, such action is more for drawing users' attention not search engines.

It's very old school way of internal linking...adding more anchor text links internally to make search engines think that's what the page is about.

It is called as internal link building, it is good for your site at some point.

Yes you can do this if you wish. Some prefer this method but really as stated it is old school. Do you like the looks of it? I mean it can really help but if it were me, I would most likely skip this.

I used to do this back in 2008/9. Not sure it has any relevance now apart from making your site look neater and adding emphasis to certain words. I haven't seen anything to suggest this still works and I have over 30 sites currently to test from.

Of course it's relevant. You're internal linking plays a major role in overall SEO, it directly influences "link-juice". This the basis that silo sites are built on. Just linking to different pages on your site on the other hand, means nothing, this is why most people fail with methods they try as the devil is in the details. Executing this correctly is essential, it's either going to give you a lot of SERP movement or zero.

As for the OP's question first I thought you meant that there's a link on a page that leads to the exact same page, that might be the case as well. Which might be the cause of a plugin I recently saw that automatically links your keywords to matching keyword pages...

The internal linking method is good. You should do that. But Bold or highlight system is not the best approach.
