High volume good content vs low volume great content?

Hey everyone,

I had a question in regard to content volume vs. fantastic SEO.

To preface this, I'm a complete newb. My partner and I are building an authority site in the vegan niche, and I'm a writer and good with social media, but I know nothing about SEO. She's the editorial manager for a giant website that does 8 mil unique views a month, so I'm just taking her word for it.

Recently I've started going down the SEO rabbit hole, and I'm a bit confused by something. She thinks that having good content with "basic SEO" at a high volume (100+ articles a month) will get us ranked in no time, and we will start getting insane traffic with our volume. But then I'm taking an SEO course and reading on here, and it seems like doing comprehensive SEO and finding the right keywords is the trick to heavy traffic. I see some sites with a low volume of content doing really well with organic traffic.

So, I guess what I'm looking for, is clarification on her statement. If we're doing solid, "basic SEO", and have well written content around, will we get really good traffic if we have a high volume of content being uploaded on the site monthly? There isn't a ton of KW research being done by her I think. I'm pretty sure it's just using what's trending in the niche, etc.

Define; basic SEO.

What is your budget for the content?

She is mistaken to a degree. The site she works for is already an authority site, so articles there will get crawled and indexed quickly.
The new sites now doing high volume are the ai, PAA type sites, and the content on a lot of these are not that good.

Plus you're going into a YMYL type niche if you're talking about the health benefits etc of a vegan diet.

For you to be churning out 100 good articles a month you're going to have to invest in writers or risk burn out if doing it yourself.

We technically have a $1,000 budget monthly if we want. We're writing half the articles and we're outsourcing the other half (roughly). So, we're both going to be doing 1-2 articles a day (60-120 just between us) and paying writers as well.

I had that same thought about the site she works for has been around 1-2 decades so they're already so well established.

I think it varies niche to niche. And better way is it do the experiments.

Also, to her "basic seo" is just finding kws and terms trending currently on Google in our niche I guess

You also need to look at your on page too, as part of a basic SEO routine.

Realistically in a general sense I think a lot of good quality is going to be better than a little bit of great quality.

It just gives you more chances for Google to pick something up.... Many times you will find stuff ranking above what I would consider great content even though it's full of errors and not actually great.

That being said I do think some keyword research is very important and as Mr f said you definitely need your own page SEO to be on point if you're cranking out a whole bunch of pages and expecting to rank without doing any link building

Would you guys recommend we get an audit done on the site to get a professional's opinion while I'm still very green and learning? Are those ever worth it/useful?

It's hard for me not to see those as anything other than a scam but I've only really had experience of seeing one done professionally after my brother stole my company and drove my rankings from number one to off the top 100 lol.

Most of the people selling audits just use professional software that does the audit for you.

I'm probably jaded here and since you're green there might be real value in an audit.

If you're going that route I would recommend you try to find someone that will look your side over manually... I mean.... Lol my brain is arguing with me on how to give you good advice here .

I guess ultimately my advice to you would be to keep reading make sure you have the basics like keywords in your heading titles. Using variations of keywords that you're trying to rank for etc etc.

Once you feel like you have a pretty good idea of what you're doing it may be worth paying a more experienced SEO to take a look and tell you where you're going wrong or tweaks you can make.... Just get some proof there's a thousand people out there that want to sell you information about how to rank and they don't have any pages themselves ranked.

One thing that can be powerful to do is to find new sites that are ranking well... So you could get something like the moz toolbar that's free and find low da sites that are ranking in the top 10...

These sites are new and generally they have to have good on page SEO to be on the top 10 so if you look at what they've done you can get a pretty good idea of what you need to do to get there.

Thanks for the reply this is a ton of great advice! I'm trying to dedicate 2 hours a day to learning so hopefully I can just keep learning quickly. Will definitely keep writing and learning and see where we're at in the next couple of months with everything.

another option is to start a second test site ... new domain and new hosting and then play with it till it breaks. Everyone says you cant keyword stuff ... so play with keyword stuffing ... want to try out a link package? blast a page on your new domain and see what happens ... I have found that often the common knowledge that everyone agrees with on youtube etc is just wrong ... haha

This way if you screw something up it does not effect your future million-dollar site. If you spend 2 hours a day learning in no time you will have a lot more knowledge than most of the seo audit "specialist"

Go with some low-competition keywords in the beginning. Once you build authority, you can target keywords with higher volume that are difficult to rank. It would be a bad idea to go with difficult KWs initially because you will lose motivation when you don't see any improvement in the rankings.
