High PR links cause sites to drop

Very difficult to say anything at this stage, but have you tried linking to different sites and all happen to go down following it?

It happens sometimes that you build a few very good links and your site takes a tumble but then recover and shoots up.

The site that I am linking from doesn't seem to be penalized. When I do a search for it with site: all the pages show up, so it's not penalized in that sense.
When this happens it either does one of 2 things. It either drops by 30-40 places instantly and then continues to trend down over th enext few weeks, OR it will drop by 35-44 places and then start bouncing up and down like this:
In my experience, that bouncing is usually how it goes before the site drops down permanently. I've mentioned this in a few threads, specifically a Penguin 2.0 thread.
It's weird because the sites are good quality. They don't have crappy content, they don't have anyting spammy on them, and they are pretty nice sites. The only thing I can thin of is that maybe the target page is overoptimized, but wouldn't a link from a high authority site be less liekly to cause an over optimization penalty? That's how a normal site would link to you, anyway, is using your keywords. It's not like you're getting 1,000 links from a program posting on profiles or something.

Not true, links from authoritative/semi-authoritative sites have great value, regardless of relevancy.
It's not only the anchor text that matters and the site doesn't have to be relevant. But, everything else being equal, a relevant backlink is better than a non-relevant one.
Relevancy does matter, as per above. However, relevancy can only do so much on its own and you can overcome the lack of relevancy hurdle by getting a shitton of quality backlinks from non-relevant sites.
Get some backlinks from a bunch of PR8-PR9 pages, see what happens.
Don't get your panties in a bunch, both of you are both right and wrong.

That's not what I mean. The site is indexed, the site has pages showing up......., but does the site your are getting the link from rank itself for terms it is supposed to be ranking for? As in does it rank for its title, do its pages rank for their titles, etc. If that site does not show up in the SERPS for keywords it should easily be ranking for, that site is probably under a penalty... be it algorithmic or manual...... if you are then using that penalized site to link to your good site, that could be the cause of all your issues. The fact that it's high PR, high DA, then is irrelevant... it's the fact that it's under a penalty and you are linking a toxic site to a good site.

This kind of behavior is natural for rank checking tools. If you see such results, it means that the way your software checks them is being affected by Google (maybe banned proxies). There's no such thing as stable rankings and this kind of fluctuations are completely normal. If the average rankings stay on certain level, that means that everything is alright.

exact same thing is happening to my sites. I know for sure there is no penalty.

Dunno but we have paid network links causing issues and OP's own network doing the same, wouldn't surprise me if the networks have been rumbled by G. I see only upward movement when I add high pr links, somethings been spotted by the looks of it. Op test a link from the site to another site, if it drops, there is a good chance your network has been rumbled. Paid networks are getting chased all the time, it's possible G has signed up and is penalizing the sites.
