I picked up a tip from an e-book or something that told me to optimize onpage SEO with an outbound link to a niche authority and then hide it for humans by making the link appear like plain text. In addition I stuck them at the bottom of my pages.

As I'm testing this more often I have a suspicion this is actually hurting me... Could that be true? Appreciate your thoughts...

I am also using this exact method on a new site. Hard to test though with so many other factors.
Be interested in hearing some results from any testing done on this.

That's a known method to get your site penalized... Whoever wrote that book is a complete dumb ass...

uh oh... only good thing is, I'm catching this blunder reasonably fast :S, is it ok if i place outbound links to authorities far below any fold? or does that reduce their effectiveness as well?

Why would you want to hide that from human eyes?
Google [ro]Bot is not stupid.
My advice: use the link naturally, but don't point to your competitor.

Because I am greedy :) I want the SEO benefit but don't want them to leave, they must convert!
