Your real IP can be detected most of the time with simple javascript. If you REALLY don't want to get traced - hop in your car, find an unprotected wireless router, clear cookies, spoof your mac, and bounce your connection through a couple proxies in not-so-friendly countries.
But disabling javascript will do the trick as well.
If he uses a good proxy (like a high anonymous http proxy or a socks proxy) it's not so easy to get his IP. At least I know no current way without exploiting bugs in the browser. (And yea, active objects and java can be bitchy)
But you can not be traced through chained proxies not like you see it in movies
There are theoretic ways to trace you like that, if half of the world would be infected by monitoring devices which is not the case.
But the more likely risk is that these proxies log your IP, in this case you leave a permanent trail in the logfiles.
