hidden links..... is that possible?

Hi ladies and gents, and thanx for your time.

Some webmaster that i meet the other day told me something that made me wonder....

He told me that for his SEO purposes he puts "hidden Backlinks" that do not show backlinks tools (personally i use Ahrefs), but they help the sites to rank in SERP.

I know that not every link is shown, and also know that in order to see some backlinks i have to wait couple of days.
But is it possible to do hidden backlinking which engines can not detect but they affect SERP? if yess please explain or give me a link so i can read.

PS. i think he was trying to confuse me but still want to be sure.

is it not dangerous? its like yelling at G, hey there you can crawl my sites which are linking my Money site, but have blocked other bot so my competitors can not see what i am doing........

I'm not too sure about how the big G would look at your site, but I would certainly be doing this if I was running a private network. Especially with the manual reporting that you can do on your competitors sites.
 
You hide them from your competitors
so they cant copy your links and make their own links on these sites

If you want to beat your competition
Just make links where they do
then make a few different ones
 
what if someone is blocking only those 3:
User-agent: Rogerbot
Disallow: /
User-agent: MJ12bot
Disallow: /
User-agent: AhrefsBot
Disallow: /

what would you suggest me to use as 4th link checking bot? i have all 3 of them, but need a 4th to check if my competitors are getting any more backlinks. (im still ranking #1 but need to have soma advance)

The links can't be hidden from Google, obviously, or they'd have no effect. They're just hidden from link miners such as ahrefs and majestic.
 
You disallow the various SEO tools from crawling your site. Lots of private networks do this as to not give their network away, though Google will be very suspicious if you block SEO tool user agents.
 
As other people have mentioned above, they can be hidden from other SEO tools avoid competitors from finding them but you can't hide them from the big G, since if you would, then they won't be worth any.
 
y i understand that.....
i dont want to implement it on my sites, im just checking what competitors do.
all bots i have tried are: ahrefs, majesticseo, kai seomoz. i like ahrefs personally, but he is blocking all 3. any suggeston for a 4th one?
