you are depending on all of the webcrawlers identifying themselves in a certain way, or at all. If one should visit in a different manner and find a different site, your penalty would be severe.

The bots don't crawl the website at the same time, so would the SE know it's just not a normal update?

Sure they would know, as soon as the site reverts back when a marked bot visits and your update is gone..
