Steven, you should consider reading more about IM in general before you start looking for internships. If you didn't know what IM is, I don't think that you're ready to be an SEO intern.

Realistically, do you think a "top SEO guy" will want to use his time to teach you the basics?

I think a lot of interesting information you can find on the site SEOmoz. It's free and there are constantly new information. You can also try the educational program from Distilled, but it is paid.

Read up, Learn and apply!
Its not going to happen overnight where you master the basics and even start earning right from the get go..
So take your time and just gain some knowledge about IM
the end result will be worth it, most people who are "Top Seo Guys" learnt on their own with a few articles from other Seo experts
