What Platform are you using ?

Apart from the platform, please take care of these following things to make your website faster.

    1) Minify all your CSS and JS files. Minification basically means removing all sorts of unwanted space and comments which consumes space.

You can use the following sites you minify your codes,
    Javascript Minification : http://jscompress.com/
    CSS Minification : http://cssminify.net/

    2) After that please sign up for a CDN service, I would highly recommend using Cloudflare as it is 100% free. Setup will barely take 2-5 minutes.

    3) If you are using wordpress, install this plugin: W3 Total Cache

    4) Compress all your photos to save up space, You can use this site : http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/

If you are using wordpress, you can download the plugin Bulksmush it

    5) Finally test your speed on this Google test page before and after and see what all things are beind recommended by Google.

Ugjunk said it better than I could, I only have one thing to add.

To minimize your JavaScript files I recommend Google's "Closure Compiler". This tool actually removes useless parts of your JavaScript code and warns you about semantic errors - no other tool does that.
