Great question. There are a lot of different ways to drive traffic to your website besides backlinks. If you want highly targeted traffic you could consider using a PPC service such as Adwords or Microsoft AdCenter. As the previous poster mentioned you could also promote links to your site on social media. If you do some onsite SEO you will begin ranking for selected keywords and keyword phrases and traffic will start coming in that way. By updating your site (especially if it's a blog) with new content on a weekly basis you will also generate more traffic.

Depending on what your site is about, you could participate in relevant forums and leave links to your site where relevant. Email marketing or other more traditional forms of marketing with your website URL attached could also help drive traffic to the site.
