hello BHW,

i just bought a VPS having cent os, i cant just install things in it, can anybody help me with it?

i am a complete noob :baby09: with this VPS topic, so if anybody could spare a little time it would be a great help...

thanks :) :)

Look up tutorials online. Thats the best way to learn Linux on your own. Optionally, you can try to get a Windows VPS because its much easier.

Honestly, I would go for a windows VPS.

I have a Linus CentOS dedi server and after about 2 weeks of trying to set up a remote desktop on it, finally gave up and accepted a windows VPS would of been cheaper than the time I spent trying to configure my server for it.

If you really want to try it however - I would search for, 'No Machine server' or 'FreeNX CentOS' and look for setup guides. I warn you now though, it is a PAIN.

I've also heard it is heavy on resources so will need a fairly good VPS to run it along with the heavy BH tools (if thats what you're trying to do).

Centos uses the YUM package manager which makes it easy to install standard applications.

Here is their forum to get you started:

First off, what are you trying to do on the VPS?
If you are wanting to use it as a desktop, ask your provider if they have a Gnome desktop image you can use.

Like I said, depends on what you want to do with it - from a personal point of view I find Ubuntu server for my VPS as its has more upto date packages out of the box (like PHP!)

Tell us what you want to do and maybe we can help a bit more

Check out some of the tutorials on howtoforge - you'll be up and running in no time.

thanks everyone, i got what i wanted ;)
