I started a new Adwords campaign for call-only ads and for most of my main keywords I get the status "Rarely shown due to low quality score". When I look at the quality scores I see they are all 1 or 2. I did not expect quality scores of 6 or 7 right from the start, but I also did not expect them this low.

I'm not really sure what the best approach would be to improve my quality scores, so I am looking for some advice. Here is some more info:

Status: Rarely shown due to low quality score
Clicks: 1
Impressions: 16
CTR: 6.25%
QS: 2/10

Max CPC: €4.00
Est. top page bid: €3.17
Est. first pos bid: €4.90

In my landing page, I added exact matches of the keyword in the content. Before this, I tested another version of this landing page in a separate campaign where I used the keywords more natural fashion but that resulted in the same problem.

Any advice is appreciated.

call-only ads

I've paid for a call-only Adwords sometimes ago. Overall bad results, but quality score was high.

For the landing page, I use:
  • A very short copy, about 50 words describing my value prop.
  • A short animated video (50 seconds), I got it from fiverr. Video content was exactly same with the copy.
  • An embed facebook page -> https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/page-plugin
I don't know if you use your homepage as landing page,
but it would be easier to test and score in Adwords if you make a dedicated landing page.

How relevant are the keywords to your actual campaign? Are you using broad/phrase/exact?

For call-only ads, the landing page should not feature in Google's QS calculation as people do not go to it via click. I have heard mixed things about this, but I do think it's correct as I see a lot of people with display URLs that either do not have a landing page or are something like Twitter/Facebook.

A few things that should help:

1) Use call-out extensions, using the keywords you bid for.
2) Try to use your keywords in the ad copy as well.
3) Use the Ad Preview tool to enter the keywords you're bidding on. Is the top ranked ad a call-only ad? Is it promoting the same thing as you?

Check your competitors ads and landing pages. I always find there some inspiration.
