Hi all,

I think I am building sites that are too competitive and was hoping I could get some advice on what type of metrics to look out for when building my sites. I like to stick with Amazon based sites and tend to find that the first page contains many big box retailers including Amazon.

Is the best approach to look results in the Top 10 that do use my keyword in the title? Should I use the allintitle operator? If there are any guides that anyone knows about that would be great.

What I am finding right now is despite building backlinks like articles, Web 2.0's, blog posts, etc that I am still not ranking right now despite the other sites having in most cases an extremely low amount of backlinks.

Thanks!

Bump for the morning :)

i really have the same problem. i really think time and quality backlinks is the key to succes.

A little bit of both...sometimes I can't find myself in the Top 20 pages and other times I rank in the #15-#40 range. With the low search volumes I rarely get traffic.

How many competing sites are in the search results for your keyword?

Ive seen some people use some type of software to identify low competition keywords. I have the same problem that you are and I'd also like to know what software can be used to check keyword competition.

Quality Content + The Right Tools + Sound SEO Strategy = Win

That could be my problem. What is a sound SEO strategy for Amazon sites? I find that the Top 10 is often littered with high domain authority sites.

did you analyze whats the PR of the pages in top 10, their domain age, domain PR, domain backlinks and page backlinks.
You need to create good content not only for the main site but also for your tier 1.

Use google adwords and select some low competition keywords use those keywords in your content. content should be quality so visitors come back and build some powerful backlinks no more then 30 per day to look natural to google. hope y answer helps you.

Honestly, ranking is based on user interaction. If you don't have a quality website, that could be why competitors are placing higher in search engine results. Besides using tools to look for different keywords, also look at how traffic is interacting with your website. If you have a high bounce rate, it doesn't matter how many backlinks you create... search engines won't want to include you as a targeted (valuable) result.

So yes, that's why there's so many people saying quality content is a sound strategy and obviously (looking at my name) I'm one to back that theory 110%.

But I find these questions so vague. I'd need to look at your website, and your competitors, to really see why they are stacking up better. It could be that you just need more specific keywords... micro-niche is always lower competition and may not have the same search volume but it does have a more heavily targeted audience protential, leading to a higher click and conversion rate.

First and foremost, competition is based on the number of indexed pages, so you want to check the number of exact searches per month against the number of phrase match results.

So let's say you find a keyword with 3,400 exact global searches per month. Next step is to put that keyword in quotes in g00gle and see what the number of results are. If they are 100,000 or under, you are going to have an easy time ranking your site for that keyword (provided you use good on-site and off-site SEO!). If the results are 50,000 or under, you will rank fast. If they are 15,000 or under, you are golden.

As far as other ways of checking keyword competition, people use a lot of tools for this and it gets too complex in my opinion, especially since (in my experience) it hasn't seemed to matter too much what other competitive factors are in place, so long as I do the same system I always use for ranking which consists of link diversity and solid on-page SEO.

Hope this helps!

Interesting! I have read some guides who just say to concentrate on the top 10 and not worry about the quotes, allintitle commands, etc. But you find it works better? Appreciate the advice.

Dont read this! its crap (about pages in serp). Why this is crap? You can find keywords with 5000 pages and strong competition, and you can find 150m pages with easy comp. You goal - get to first 10 results.
Check only top10 results, with seoquake or traffic travis (or any other tool). You need check how many mainpages at top10, pagerank of 10 pages and number of backlinks. Also you can use DA and PA by Seomoz.

Personally I do not like the 'in title' and 'in url' method. I like to focus on the top 10 results for my keyword.

Firstly I will use Google keyword tool to find keywords with over 1,000 US local searches (it can be less if a solid buying keyword with a decent sale amount that I know will make me a profit but generally 1k+) then I'll look at the top 10 results for that keyword (simply go to Google and type "keyword") if the pages that come up are recognised brands, authority sites and big names like Amazon then I'll give it a miss immediately. If not I will examine the top 10 results and see if they are direct competition, check whether they are also selling products or if it's something I might be selling (or affiliating with) and if some / most of them are I'll probably skip it. If not I will load up Traffic Travis (the free version works fine) and go to the SEO tab then 'competition' and insert my keyword(s) and click 'fetch'. It then analyses the top 10 results and will come back and tell you what the average page rank is. If 3 or less I'll probably give it a go.
