The US Congress is considering America's first system for censoring the Internet.
Despite public outcry, the Internet Censorship bill could pass at any time.
If it does, the Internet and free speech will never be the same:

Website Blocking
If SOPA or Protect IP passes, the government can order internet providers to block any site for its users' infringing posts, using the same DNS-blocking methods as China or Iran.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are an ordinary noncommercial user. Singing a pop song on Facebook could be a felony.

Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

signed up. everyone should. some serious stuff.

can't help since i'm not from the states. wish i could.

Lol, I think there have been over 5 threads opened on this on BHW already..

Anyways, my take on it:
To be blunt I think it's all a load of bullcrap - even if it does pass (which is unlikely even without all the petitions), the government will be unable to use it, as it would result in widespread public outrage considering how big of a deal this is in pop culture at the moment.

Not going to be bothered to sign it.

This debate has been extended in US Congress. I doubt any changes will be made. It is just to protect our copyright laws - nothing more.

Don't worry, you can still make money off of USA if you are a foreigner.

No, it couldn't "pass at any time", it literally just got referred to a subcommittee this month.

Subcommittees are where the vast majority of bills die. If it makes it past committee, which is HIGHLY doubtful at this point, it would still have to pass the House, which would be nearly impossible, and the Senate, which would have slightly better odds, but still bad odds of passing, and after all of that, have to be signed into law by the President, which honestly is probably a tossup.

In short, it can't "pass at anytime", stop fearmongering.

Yes this is a pretty shitty bill, and making your opinions known to your legislators is a good idea, but do it the right way, not by making blanket statements about something you don't know much about.

How much does a license for singing a cover song costs? If I wont make any money from it?
I really wish they would provide more information then trying to scare people.
