I have gotten a vps for a month and only details i got are the ip address, username and password as well as the location.
How do i set it up

Maybe you can use RDP? You should try contacting your provider for more information.
 
Umm i got this as a free trial from a person nd dont hav acces to him nymor. Btw what is rdp

First question: Is it a Windows or Linux VPS?
 
If you are using win 8+
press win button.
write remote desktop connection. (click on the result)
write ip.
click connect.
enter username and pass.
 
You should contact your hosting provider about it.
they will certainly help you to connect and they will know the type of service you have ;) (Windows / Linux)
 
If it's a plain server without control panel (cpanel / Plesk) then either you need to know how to manage a server (linux command / windows interface) OR
you need to take help of your webhost.
May i know what are you planning to use it for?
 
best thing to do if you don't how to use it is to contact the host and get it set up with managed support.

But really if you don't know what to do with it. Then a VPS might not be for you.
