Lets say you have a 10 page website, and say each page was optimized for a target keyword.

Now lets say theoretically you got all 10 pages to the #1 spot in Google for the target keyword.

Where do you go from there?

Do you try to add more pages to your site and target new keywords? Or do you try to rank the current pages for other long-tail keywords?

Also on a side note, do you guys use the keywords of how visitors found your site in Google Analytics to increase traffic (ie. try to rank those keywords as well?)

Curious to how you guys go about maximizing Search Engine traffic.

Thanks in advance.

Add more content to your site. If you can do it in a continuous manner, Google will love it. Also try to provide some useful information to the visitor in order to improve the average time spent on the site. It will affects rankings a lot.

At the same time you can try to rank more for the long tail keywords as well. Once you start receiving decent amount of traffic to your pages, it will be easy to rank for those other long tail ones as well.

There is no easy answer.
However as we are talking theory:
Yes I would add some more pages/keywords to get ranked for.
You will automatically get ranked for long tail keywords based on your front line keywords.
Next? If you are that good at ranking keywords then you start setting up more websites to rank for keywords, rinse and repeat until you are ranked for every desirable keyword.

Experience:
1. Domain Keywords.
2. Domain related keywords content.
3. Good, useful or free stuff in your site.
4. Exchange backlink with related sites.
e.g. Search on google: online video downloader or online video converter.
you'll find the domain. you know what...last year, i found they r not in the first.
