Help needed with wordpress

I'm a pretty bad technical guy, even if i'm learning everyday.

i've got this message Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 40961 bytes)

I know that i have to increase memory on my wordpress site, but how?

Can anyone help me on this?

Possible solutions:
- Get in touch with host and have them bump up your memory limits.
- try deactivating plugins till you find the memory hog.
- check your db run-time stats in php-admin for memory hog.
Note: Plenty of autoblog plugins, auto-posters, and even a lot of comment activity can be resourse hogs too.

It should be on your cPanel. MyPHPAdmin... if you're getting blocked from even getting on your WP site... go into the tables and delete everything out of the Plugins field... basically all that will do is deactivate them all.

Your host - depending on who they are - should be able to tell you what the memory hog is. Sometimes some plugins don't work with certain themes or with other plugins... that could also be the problem. If you're trying to run a ton of plugins, that also might be the problem.

Sorry, am pretty tired and was not clear. Suggesting phpMyAdmin in cpanel. If no cpanel access, use tip 2, then approach host to check for resource hogs.

i'm not blocked from the site, its only that my caterories do not work since i did an update of wordpress itself..

That could be an indicator. If you have a plugin controling cats that is not proven with new WP version, could break site and cause memory draining loop. May have to roll-back or get a new plugin.

Might try going to WP site and checking your plugins for compatability, or checking the (....eh hem... hoity toity) forum there.

My best suggestion I can offer tonight...

try adding this to an .htaccess file:
php_value memory_limit 64M (replacing the 64 with whatever you wish as you may not need it to be that high.)

This won't always work if the Hosting Company is controlling it. I know with most hosting companies I've been through, inserting this won't do much. If you call them, they usually (happily) will increase it.

Because most don't give you access to the php.ini. I have used the above method on three sites now. All hosted with different hosts and had no issues.
