Hello, i've got this domain newwallpapers.org that is an EMD of around 8000 exact searches. It is ranking around 20 for Yahoo and Bing, but for google isn't ranked in the top 1000. As an EMD it should be rather easy to rank and it also has Medium competition. I have just bought this website so i don't know what the previous owner has done with SEO. Could it be bad backlinks that they have created that has affected the rank to not appear in the top 1000 of google? (this site is indexed by google). What can i do to help rank this website right now? Buy high quality blog comments, press release or what?

first of all medium competition does not mean that there are less sites/blogs it means there are less advertisers, secondly you need to build backlinks.

Well my website isn't about blog posts, its all wallpapers, thats not considered as unique content right?

Take a look at the backlinks from the previous owner. There's also the chance that it's with some penalty, there was big one that threw some EMDs off the results a while ago.

don't know if any of these gave the website a penalty? Could you tell which one is bad?

Forget about Alexa, it wont give you a complete picture. Check it in opensite explorer.
If your website is all about wallpapers then you should work on ranking in Google image search. This can be achieved by using good alt tags to your wallpaper. Do keyword research and try to put in as many relevant alt tags as possible. You should get some good traffic from google image search.
Dont stop building links though. Keep working on them but make sure there are of good quality.

Throw some fresh content on their and build some url links (http://mydomainname.com). Wait a few weeks to see if the site starts moving around.
If no movement or if it slips back even more, I would just start over with a new domain. No sense in beating a dead horse. Some penalties might not be lifted for 365+ days.

The content just has to be useful and "scratches that itch" for the visitor. Content can build links by itself if you are dead on with what people are asking for. Make sure you provide many ways for people to share your pages by using social buttons, attractive ones.. That'll get you social signals and that's what Google is wanting to see from you right now!
