Help! How to find Competitor's PR8 Backlinks?

I feel kinda stuck. Doing research in Market Samurai on my competitors, there is one site which keeps coming up for the various keywords i want to use for my campaign. This site is consistantly in the #1 spot, so i charged myself with finding out "Why" so I'd know how to beat them.

Due to a thread I posted here, my attention was turned toward the sites links. Market Samurai reported in it's "PR Analysis" that they have 8 PR8 backlinks pointing to their site.

However, when an "Anchor Text Analysis" is performed on the same site, those PR8 backlinks don't come up. Nor can i find any PR8 backlinks using yahoo's site explorer..

Can anyone tell me what gives? Does Market Samurai lie about things like that? Is it possible by any means that this site could have "hidden" their backlinks from Market Samurai or Yahoo's explorer?

I can't stand when tools don't report similar information or when things simply don't add up.

1. go to:

http://www.popuri.us

type in your competitor's url.

2. wait for the results.

3. click on the ' details ' link to the right of the results listings and it will give you direct paths to all of the balcklinks associated with that site.

4. post where they post.

Thanks for the reply! I used the steps above, but unfortunately the popuri.us site simply refers me back to Yahoo's site explorer, and in these results I'm not finding what Market Samurai told me i should be finding.

In the Yahoo results, the highest PR backlink listed is a PR4. There are plenty of "n/a" listings in these results... could any of those be the PR8 backlinks MS saw? Or does it mean they're less than PR0? (this is what i used to think)

You are referring to the target competitor only have ' yahoo directory results ' showing up in popuri.us?

That's not uncommon. The sites may not be on your search results due to the fact that pr updating isn't real time either. A couple of other reasons couple be that the pr8 link dropped them since, as well as the sites could have dropped out of rank/favor with google.

Sounds like you are chasing a red harring at this point.

Before giving up, give this link a try, as it exposes backlinks and pr if any for any target site. I've used it as one of the many alternatives in my competitive research. It's free too...heh.

Inside the "PR Analysis" tool in Market Samurai's SEO competition module, the URLs will be listed.

It might be a null anchor text backlink (an image link, or even a link that has been removed from the page)

Yea this is where i first saw them. I did the "PR Analysis" and it showed 8 PR8 backlinks... did the "Anchor Text Analysis" and they didn't come up.

Since then i've used the backlinks checker tool posted above as well as linkdiagnosis and seo Spyglass... all of which are reporting that their highest backlink is PR4.

Their pr8's must have been removed...
 
Another possibility could be that it was a link from a blog sitting on the homepage of the blog (which is a PR8) - and it's been pushed onto Page 2

That's very true. Checking the backlinks and targeting blogs specifically would grind down the list enough to make it workable to test that theory. Would take a little bit of manual research if he wants to sniff it out or not but well worth it in the end, for peace of mind in simply ' knowing '.

holy crap. i just checked popuri and my personal company website jumped to a PR4 and its not that old. i haven't even touched the seo in months. damn.

Thanks for the extra ideas posed! After 15 minutes i gave up looking for the blog which it might have been on... having looked so hard and in so many different places, i think it's safe to say they don't have their PR8 backlinks anymore, so i'm happy :)

Edit: thought i'd mention that the tool i found most comprehensive was SEO Spyglass. Others seem to leave out one thing or another, but Spyglass had it all.
