[Help] How i migrate site from http to https ?

Hello members,

I have a site currently without ssl so it is http://anything.xyz and now i bought a new hosting and they are providing free https. So i need to migrate my site from http to https .

One of the member of this forum told me that it would hurt my SEO and indirectly my site because its a change in URL.

I previously know that pointing a old domain to new one via 301 redirect and submit site change in google webmaster tool will do the trick, Without hurting my site.

But this case is different as the domain name is same and as soon i update the name server to https site the traffic will start coming on the new site (https) so there is no option to do a 301 redirect here ?

So what should i do how i can change the site without hurting it..

You will face two opinions, one will say that if you proper migrate your site, you positions will dance but than it will come to normal. And the rest will say that anyway you will lose some rankings.

I personally moved one of my site to http and properly redirected all links, positions danced and back but they was far from the same. Personally I think that anyway you will lose some ranking, at list because of redirects, we all remember buzz around 301 redirects and getting top using them, currently any redirected links lose it is power by 15-30%. If you have high positions and your visitors does not fill forms with passports or credit card numbers, keep http version.

That is only one man opinion, listen to others and decide your self to beer or not to beer.

SEO can be preserved. Here too using 301

I don't really get your point. If you get a hosting with SSL support, your website should respond to both h t t p and h t t p s connections.

In my case, I used a simple .htaccess condition to migrate the traffic from h t t p to h t t p s (so every request to h t t p domain or h t t p w w w . domain will point to h t t p s : w w w .domain) through a 301 Redirect.

By doing so, I never seen any decrease in rankings long-term.

Wow never thought of this before that the site wil respond to both protocols.

Genius if you keep indexing both protocols, what about dublicated pages, as for google http and htttps versions will be complete different links, and seo wise having dublicated content is not best thing

If you keep the same domain, so http://example[.]com becomes https://example[.]com, then you shouldn't worry much, as you can install a plug and the SEO will not be affected in the long run.

However, if you decide to migrate to a new domain, for example to https://other-example[.]com you can flag this to google, in the search console and they will take notice of it without affecting your SEO.

Helpful post, but do you have solid evidence that http to https redirects lose the 15-30%? Not that they should automatically be trusted, but Google's reps have said that this specific redirect passes 100% of Pagerank.

OP, I migrated a few of my websites back in September using this guide: https://kinsta.com/blog/http-to-https/. I had no problems and lost no rankings, although these were small (<100 page) sites. I wasn't happy about making the change and don't feel like https is necessary, but I felt the benefits outweighed the costs. You are taking a risk migrating, but you're also going to risk losing conversions to that annoying insecure label if you don't.

I really don't know how many times i say this on this forum but redirect from http --> https won't lose links juice if all redirection are done right.

This comes from a experience of moving over 20 sites both for my own sites and my clients site (no loss in ranking nor increase), just remember to add https://non-www and https://www to webmasters tool, submit sitemap and pretty much that is it.

If your site is hosted with wordpress, you can simply use simple SSL which recommended by others above.
