choosing a proxy is one thing, it is the implementation of some protocol within a graphic user interface that most people are actually interested in.
When it comes to proxies such as VPNs there are several standard protocols that are used by all the VPN providers you will find. They are IPSec, IK2VP, OpenVPN and wireguard.
in your specific case I think that despite wireguard being weaker on security, streaming and downloading is faster than on any other protocol. This coud also be because StrongVPN offers it and the speeds it offered were excellent. BUT wireguard has no kill switch and was only released on GitHub at most a couple of years ago. At the moment i think only strongvpn, nordvpn ams wireguard support it. Wireguard is actually open source so you can implement it yourself using the command line in Unix or as a GUI for Mac and windows.
ideally you should always choose a provider that costs money and has an explicit no logging policy. I’m pretty sure 80% of VPN providers lie about this but that is inherent to entrusting your security in someone else’s hands. Since there is no real way to check This claim, the next most important thing should be where the provider is registered. Always choose a non-Five eyes member state e.g an offshore one. they are the least likely to actually give anybody your logs even If they claim not to have them. its just much harder to get any info from say Bermuda than New York no matter where you live.
personally I would choose Mullvad VPN. The reason? They do not require any personal info From you. So provided payment is done via crypto, they have no clue who you are. You just have a number username and password. Ofc their servers will register your IP address when you start connecting, but that is not quite as identifying as a name amd address + IP. It means the most they can ever say is that this address connected to this server amd potentislly describe its behavior but that’s it. No way to known if it was Alice or Tom. Plus they already support wireguard on top of the older protocols such as openvpn. For anonymity they win And that should be the focus. For experience I liked nord vpn. It looked nicer, more features and more expensive. Everything worked quite well including streaming. Excellent customer service and If I recall they allowed configurations with TOR tunneling as well.
proton VPN is a new one that I liked very much because of its combo with some hosting capabilities and storage for some annual cost. Works very well and not even in EU.
most importantly watch out for 1) tje country of the owner. Some 30% of VPNs we use are Chinese owned and I cam tell you from experience the applications always escalate user privileges to root amd them do whatever they like without your input needed. Even an American one is better than a Chinese one if you’re serious about privacy.
