I have an SEO client who asking me a question..

He got an crawl report on SEOmoz shows "500 duplicate page content and 1200 duplicate page title.. Why it happened ? Is this because of building backlinks, blogging, off page SEO or on-page issue ?

If so, How to resolve this duplicate page content and page title!

Please help me who knows the answer!

Regards,
Bart

Hi, if this is a dynamic site, then most of the pages contain same meta title and meta description, if you post more information then some one can surely help you

you can add metatags.nl/rel_canonical rel canonical to tell google which page must be indexed. duplicated content wont influence your pageranking by the way...thats a myth

Yes, Its an Dynamic website of over 8500 indexed pages.. I can't show website URL in public. If anyone really wants to help me with this issue then i will provide the details.

Okay thanks for the info, But my question is "building number of contextual links, directory links, web 2.0 will result in such problem or its all only because of website on page error ?

Back2form,

Is error is caused by on-site issues or in other words issues that you can directly change yourself through programming or a backend interface if you are using a CMS. For the page titles, simply change the page titles in your programming or applicable area if you are using a CMS. For instance in Joomla page titles are changed on menu items. For wordpress page titles are generally post titles unless you are using some type of SEO plugin.

If you can tell me how you built your site (i.e. programmed from scratch or using a CMS or some other site builder), I may be able to tell you how to change these specific items.

As mentioned by the other member, duplicate content won't necessarily get your site penalized, it just confuses engines as to which page should be indexed. Configuring .htaccess (if supported by your server) could fix this issue. There are a lot of variables here depending on how the site was built.

More on duplicate content,

Hope that helps,

I hate to go negative here but OMG, just give the client their money back. They have enough sense to be using SEOmoz and your 4 troubleshooting suggestions are mega fails that anyone with the most basic SEO knowledge should know.

The issue is with their CMS, for whatever reason its either replicating the same page into duplicate content, or there is an error where it just shows the same page title for every page because some variable got deleted out of their title tag section.
