[HELP] Domain privacy question?

I have a domain that is registered under my name/address/info. I did not get privacy protection when I first purchased it. Well, now 2 years later I want to do something with it (a viral site of sorts) and I do not want my name attached to it. Is there anything I can do to hide my info now or is it too late?

What is your registrar?

If you move it to namecheap price is $3 for private whois.

Honestly, I am not concerned about the cost. I am more concerned that after I go private it will be truly private since I have had this domain for 2 years with all of my info out there.

I'd start afresh. There are generic sites that scrape the whois database, and I sure somebody would see the info (even a Google cache is enough).

If age is a concern, then purchase an oldie that's for sale.

Many of the stats sites take time to update, so even if you switch on privacy now, it can take months to filter through (unless you go to each site and manually update).
Also many WHOIS sites keep past records and the history will always be available unless you pay for removal.

It will probably be better to use a new Domain or create another account and transfer the domain over and say you sold it if anybody asks (Plausible deniability - to do this properly, you should appear to have sold it to somebody in another country and get a fake invoice knocked up and email exchanges between accounts).

Thanks guys. This is what I figured. I will more than likely just come up with a new brandable domain name instead of using this one. It just sucks because it is an awesome domain name! Thanks again for the responses.

You are willing to not use a good domain name just because of your whois history? You can turn on whois privacy and it will hide your whois data now.
