Help a clueless IT guy out with some design tips.

Hey guys. I've stated to do some work for an IT Consultation company in my area, and they have all ready got me doing things that is a little out of my usual area of expertise...

They want me to "spruce up" their homepage (I'm a developer not a designer lol). Their template is pretty basic and bland. Besides having a brand new customized template created, I was wondering if any of the wonderful designers here had any tips they could give me to make it look a little bit more professional.

Thanks.. but all I asked for was a few tips regarding the layout and maybe the color scheme..

HEre are few observations

1) The word iT is not clearly visible in the header due to background image.
2) The header image doesn't look like that of an IT company
3) The gray menu at the top looks bland and too thick. Try reducing its height and experiment with different colors (maroon, brown etc.)
4) The logos at the left (Cisco) sem too big. Try reducing their size

Thats for starters. Take opinion from others as well.

should be a comma after "edmonton", the proper nouns should be capitalized, and the font size of the slogan should be a bit smaller. the company logo should also be a part of the banner, and serve as the focal point. "ccna cisco certified" should be moved because it's competing with the company logo above, and it's confusing. imo the logo of the company in focus should always outshine the other logos on the site. if you include the "it core" logo in the banner, then just remove it from where it's at now. if not, then move the "ccna cisco certified" logo down further in the column (maybe after the "solutions").

yeah I would change the header graphic to include the logo and reduce the size of the top menu abit. if your client doesn't want to reduce the size of the cisco logo I would move it to the bottom of that column

I would probably change the font that's used in the headings as well, I don't know to what I just don't think that one you have suits the theme

Hey I'm in the same boat as you - techie not a designer - but I was looking at the site and went here:

Click that Contact Us link the last paragraph and get an error - "Ffox can't find the server at...."

Just wanted to let you know. Sorry I can't help with design, I might as well be colour-blind for all the good graphics do me.

. I really haven't had a chance to get to this job yet and examine things in detail as these guys have got me running all over the city. I find it incredible some of these IT companies can have huge corporate clients yet still have gaping holes in their website like this..
