I'm diving into the same journey, along with SEO. Any feedback you get I'm sure can help me as well, I'll keep an eye on your thread.

    Good luck

Yeah OP, I was thinking of becoming a Wordpress Developer, but then I thought it might require a little effort, like looking at what other WP devs charge for their work.
I thought about searching on google and finding out that information immediately but decided against it.
I think I will carry on thinking about it, until somebody else finds out the information that I require, then I will probably spend a little more time thinking about it, just to be on the safe side.
Good Luck on the journey though OP, seems like nothing can stop you.

i found a few links that talked about how much somone should charge and what makes a Wordpress developer useful which is instead of just slapping togeather a wordpress website ( which most people do) actually providing ROI by customizing things to target audience.

If your looking at building Wordpress sites by configuring and customizing existing themes then there is a big market for this, I would say a fair price range for this type of work is anywhere from $300-$4000...depending on their needs, how many pages, etc... many think that you shouldn't charge much for this because your not really designing and programming a theme from scratch but configuring & customizing an existing theme can get pretty time consuming and still takes a bit of skill to navigate Wordpress. Plus many times you need to deal with tweaks which sometimes require you to get into code or to hire a programmer.

If your wanting to make 5-10k for site builds then you should think about learning programming and building sites from scratch.

You could also consider to sell your work on themeforest. However, this is not recommended for novices.

Well, I can say to you one thing if you're good enough, you won't ever regret. There is no such community on the Internet like WP community, speaking generally. Almost every 3th or 4th website in the World is running on WP installation. Just take a look at Freelancers websites WP and Logo design are most wanted skills. WP has probably the biggest developer community on the Internet. WordPress Codex is probably the most extensive and detailed online manual ...
So potentials are huge...BUT ...it all depends on you and your WP knowledge and skills. Your biggest potential enemy is lack of patience ...it takes some time to learn and get desired experience.
The good news is that almost all that you need is free and easy to find and never forget the biggest community with countless blogs and forums where you can get help.
WP Codex should always be your starting point. These things are required:
    1. Good knowledge of HTML/CSS
    2. Decent knowledge of PHP generally
    3. Good knowledge of WP PHP coding standards
    4. WP Themes and Plugins structure ...

It all depends how much effort you want to invest in learning ...but the results can be very stimulating ...I make my living of WP ...as a freelancer and as a Themes and Plugin developer ..and I'm with WP only two years ...
Wish you much luck and glad that you are interesting in WP ...

    • But how good are you at PHP, mySQL, and JS?
    • Can you create a perfect custom home page if you're given an idea for it by a prospect?
    • How fast can you do it?
    • Do you test and debug everything you code?
    • Can you develop custom plugins if required?
    • Are you willing to provide your portfolio (does not include mock projects), and references?
    • Can you create a good woocommerce site?
    • How much is your experience as a freelance/pro web developer?
    • Can you communicate with your US/UK(/Can/Aus/etc) clients effectively, and understand their requirements perfectly? Because that's where the bulk of good projects come in, and ofc the pay is great.

Can you quote $1,500 as your fees without sweating :)?
Or more than $50 per hour rate (as a WP developer)?
(jk) Ofc, if you deserve to be paid that amount or more, and may be within a year of becoming a pro WP developer...

These are some of the serious questions you need to answer if you want to become a good WP developer.

...Just one important addition to your very quality reply srb888 ...now days People want very extensive Theme Options ...and that can be even more difficult to create then Theme or Plugin it's self.
From October this year WP demands all Theme Options to be done with WP Customizer (if you want to submit your theme to WP repository) ...so far developer didn't rely too much on WP Customizer, they rather used Theme Options frameworks like Redux etc ...
And someone mentioned Theme Forest ...there things went almost crazy about Theme Options ...I mean how extensive they are in those WP Themes. The competition is huge there, but Theme Forest is on the end on that "long road" in becoming WP Developer.

If you can get the business, find awesome themes that developers have spent countless hours creating, and modify them slightly for your client. Less time consuming and more profitable, how I see it anyways ;)

Great thinking!!Appreciate you for your journey. I'm thinking so.I'll do or nor not don't know. I'm just trying. I'll wait for your upcoming thread and some update. Here charge per website will depends on the model it's not fixed. You have to negotiate with your client then you have to came in a decision, which price are reasonable for you, you'll get that price but here, you have to mind experienced have a great demand.Good luck..........

WordPress templates are dirt cheap these days. Most of businesses now prefer to use $50 godaddy template over hiring a dedicated source. But a custom WP website should sell from $400 to $1000, depending on client's budget also the design quality.

Good luck with your new business.

Since you have a diploma in web dev, I'm assuming you already have a working knowledge of html5,css, and javascript.

If I were you I'd study PHP and learn how to build themes from scratch. When you can do that with minimal googling/reading documentation(<2hrs stuck time per project), then move on to custom plug-ins. When you are pro at that get a freelancer pro account and work for peanuts until you have a few good reviews.

After that raise your price and bank.

As another has said a lot of businesses are using free website builders from godaddy etc and they advertise on tv so there is huge competition. I went down the route of building and coding sites from scratch, very time consuming and technical as a lot involves PHP and other scripting languages including CSS.
So many WP templates out there now it is easier to modify them and just use a child theme. Writing code from the ground up you have to keep updating as new Wordpress updates are announced and bugs are detected and have to jump on them quickly.

Since it is not from the scratch, it will just go within $500-$3,000. Study more so that you can create from scratch and charge more, dependent to the client's website needs. But anyhow, it's a good start. Keep it up dude. :)
