I have a site in the home improvement sector that I continue to update contents on.

I was able to get my mid-competition keywords to rank around the 25-30 range but not any higher.

I have around 90 backlinks and my competitor has around 70 based on ahref.

Their site has been around longer though which could be a factor, any tactic I can implement to help?

No ones really gonna be able to answer this without seeing the site which you probably don't wanna give out for obvious reasons.

Could be his links are better, could be that your on-page isn't optimized quite right.

Check the relevance/authority/power of both of your links to start, and for on-page audits I like Surfer SEO if I can't get it to move myself.

First of all, the number of backlinks is not much of a factor, but more importantly the quality and relevance of these links is what counts.

This being said, getting more links and improving the site is what you should to do to rank higher.

Thank you for all the amazing answers. I have a backlink on news sites and PBN, comments, and social networks. I guess I just have to keep on building then.

Check any of the basic guidelines for SEO and focus on the search intent. Sometimes things don't work out exactly as expected. This is not rocket science although you can rinse and repeat the whole process all over again.

Sometimes is better to rank diversifying keywords, than focusing for one specific keyword. Google algorithm is not perfect, and sometimes gets stucked in one parameter impossible to be identified.

From my research, sometimes a link from a specific site which seems average to our eyes (i.e. ahrefs backlink profile), empowers 10x more than a link from a site with 20 times more theorical authority.

There are various reasons, On-page optimization and content optimized for search intent. Quality of backlinks. Focus on the quality of links from unique sites and make sure the content is informative to use.

i have a similar problem this days, i get 4 guest post for a single post (inner page) and 0 movements, sometimes google takes time for switch positions :(

Focus on quality not quantity of links.

Keep adding links and content.

And PBN links will never show up in ahrefs.
