I think this can help grow channels from zero more easily. I know someone who did it with great success, but how does it actually work? Does a new channel that adds collaborations get extra impressions from the collaborator’s channel?

Collabs don’t unlock extra impressions by default. Distribution still depends on click-through rate, retention, watch time, and post-click behavior. But u get exposure to a warm pool that already trusts the collaborator. If that audience clicks, watches deep, subscribes, the system expands reach. If they bounce, growth stalls. Collabs work when niche overlap is tight and content format matches viewer expectations
