I was pulling around $2k-$3k/month on Upwork as a top-rated writer. I ended up getting banned when a couple of clients I'd taken off-platform messaged me when I disappeared for three weeks in May.
I actually make the exact same, plus 5%, now because I kept all of my clients. Go figure, when you work with someone for a couple of years you end up exchanging contact information at some point.
Like anything, it is what you make it.
I liked being able to pick up new clients easily and the rates were generally better than working with Freelancer. For whatever reason I never seem to able to qualify for content mills in general(after three years in the field and a host of happy clients behind me) so now I'm working with old clients and applying for agencies.
If you're working as a writer right now, however, you're not going to be able to join Upwork. They've been routinely denying applications for writers and SEO experts for about a year now.

You're completely right, I just tried applying with them a few days ago on an account I never finished two years ago and they denied it. Sucks, because about 4 years ago I had built up my clientele until I started working a full time job. Now I am in need of some side money and I had tried to contact previous clients that I've had and only about 2 out of 8 have replied back.
So basically, it's like once you're in the game of freelance writing you have to keep at it because if you leave for a bit and come back (depending upon how long you are away from it), it'll be like starting all over again.

Upwork can be tough to start out with. You gotta take every job you can no matter the pay to build up your reviews. That said, if you find one client who you can work with long-term, you can get some good cash. Note that the fee is a whopping 20% by default. As you've earned $500 with one client, the fee for that client will continue at 10% only. That's why you wanna build long-term client relations on Upwork.

Not only that, but it's also a very competitive site from what I've heard. From what I've noticed everyone jumps on the easiest jobs making it harder for newbies to get their experience in.

Tried Upwork back in the days with no luck of getting orders.
Recently, I tried to create another account on Upwork, however, the account kept getting rejected with the message "We aren't in need of your services right now"
On top of that, many successful freelance writers state that Upwork is a race to the bottom and is not worth it at all.

Upwork used to be good for jobs a couple years ago. Now freelancer is where it's at. Upwork been dead.
Upwork went public about 2 weeks ago, this means that upwork is at best ever since it has been founded.
Been working with Upwork clients for quite a while now, it has been my full-time job for past 2.5 years, okay FEE’s i get it, we all hate that 20% , 10% and 5% cut
But the platform is secure, you get paid on schedule, 98-99% uptime.. so this comes at cost.

There are hundreds of writing jobs posted daily. There's more than enough for full-time work, you just need to work a few oddjobs to build some feedback.
