Have you ever had a site penalized?

If so what did you do to cause it and how long did it take to recover if ever?
is yours penalized? if so, interested to know what you did to get it penalized?

what happens when you search for site:yourdomain.com ? do you see your site in the number one position?

Yes, once I posted the names, locations, and phone numbers of virtually every restaurant in the USA on my restaurant review site. I had huge traffic for a few days. Then suddenly without warning Google mob did a manual action against my website and it never came back. I had to forget the plan and make a new website. The good thing about IM is there are always new ideas. Especially if you hang out on BHW Saturday nights.

Makes sense, google don't like competition. You were doing their job ^_^

@OP : None for me.. just the usual shuffle now and then but never panelized or had major change in rankings

No I have never had a site penalized, just curious how many people experienced this. I would love to see some examples because I've yet to see it.. what does it actually take, buy the wrong links your gone? I'm beginning to think it's mostly a myth

Yes where I was working the guy had created profile links so had to delete those links to get the penalty removed

Happened to my client sometimes. Penalties typically result in your website dropping in the SERPS, seeing less traffic, or even being completely de-indexed in extreme cases. It can take over weeks/months to solve it.

My first site got a penalty. A competitor spammed it to death. I disavowed some links but nothing happened. I disavowed all links still nothing happened. I learned that Google employees are too lazy to manually check anything and most of them don't bother about what's happening in SERPs. I used this information to rank my parasites and made more money than what my site could make in its entire lifetime. Screw Google and live happily ever after.
