    How about this.
I researched a fantastic keyword, checked with Whois for the domain name I wanted and found that it was available as .com.
I attempted to register and host the domain with a big time (not GoDaddy ) host registrar.
During the sign up and just prior to the billing process the screen timed out.
I contacted ?online help? and was informed that there was an unscheduled maintenance stoppage and advised to try again in 15 mins. I tried again a little later and the payment was made through Paypal. A welcome email with registration and hosting details arrived within minutes. I logged into Cpanel and everything appeared fine.
I waited for 24 hours as advised and again tried C panel. This time the password was rejected.
I contacted ?Online help? and was sent a new password. I was able to enter Cpanel to see files had been uploaded whilst my username still showed. I typed in the URL to find that a webpage had been posted. ?Online help? now said that there appeared to be another party sharing the same account and promised to send a ticket to admin in order to resolve the matter. I received an email from admin asking for the payment details which I duly sent. A second email arrived, this time with an apology and the explanation that another customer had signed up for the same domain name 5 days before I had signed up and would I care to choose another domain name. I responded by asking for an explanation as to why it took 5 days to register the other person?s domain and also why they had taken my payment. I also pointed out to them that Whois showed that the other person?s creation date and time was several hours after they had taken my payment. What a coincidence the same domain name the same day. Two hours later I received another email, a different person this time, apologising again and explaining that the other customer had indeed previously paid for the domain but due to an error had not been registered. Only when upon receiving my order did they realise that the other order was pending. This customer surely must have had infinite patience. Finally I am offered two months free hosting and the waiving of a transfer fee if I choose another domain name.
I have yet to respond and hope that I can receive your comments before I do.
Guess who the registrant is showing to be in Whois? It?s the Registrar and the status is locked whatever that means.
That timeout sure looks suspicious now.

Your comments would be much appreciated.

I highly doubt that someone was sitting there and decided to screw you over. Likely, they had some type of problem that caused the error like they said. Regardless, I don't think that there is much that you can do in this situation. I would try to get as much free stuff out of them as possible and then suck it up and move on.

    Do not accept free hosting!

Stand firm and request your domain, tell them that even being an error from their part, you saw the domain available to you, and decided to buy it through them.

If you decided to buy the domain through other registrar, you would keep it and they would be the ones apologizing to the other guy.

Do not let the domain go!

Tell them you will take it to the last consequences, even the ICANN if needed.

what register was this? You got scammed by them, Corrupted employees really suck. Ask them for proof of this registration that occurred 5 days before you purchased it. If they say they cant, call BS on them and contact ICANN

Move on, is it really that important?

Ask them for more free stuff, like 12 months free hosting and a free domain name or two. They stuffed it up, make them pay.

Whois shows that the hosting company owns the domain.
Thanks to you all for your thoughts.
I'll keep you informed of developments.
